Dancing with the Stars 2013 said goodbye to a third celebrity hopeful at the close of the April 9 results show on ABC. So which contestant fell short? Read on for a recap of the action.
The season 16 female pros and troupe members kicked off the show with a striking, girl power-charged routine choreographed by Sharna Burgess.
DWTS hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke quickly reviewed the week four leaderboard before introducing a highlight reel of April 8's action. Moments later, leaderboard toppers Aly Raisman and Mark Ballas became the first couple to advance to week five. They were quickly followed to safety by Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy, Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough, and Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson.
Following a break, Tom and Brooke turned to head judge Len Goodman, who called Raisman and Ballas to the ballroom floor to present an encore of their emotional, high-flying "Titanium" contemporary dance.
More results were in store next, as Tom called NFL star Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff forward to chit chat for a moment before calling them safe. He then addressed The Bachelor Sean Lowe and Peta Murgatroyd, whose confessional showed the duo slamming themselves and suggesting they "go throw up together" after turning in a rocky show-starting Viennese waltz. Despite their dose of tough self-love, they too were proclaimed safe to dance again, much to their delight.
After another break, Brooke introduced a silly segment featuring a guy who called himself judge Bruno Tonioli's writer, who claimed to use "a bedazzled stick of dynamite" to string together the creative comments uttered by the feisty panelist. Afterward, Tom assured viewers that Bruno does indeed come up with his own clever quips.
Country star Brady Paisley hit the ballroom next, with a rendition of his recent hit "Southern Comfort Zone." DWTS pros Peta and Tony Dovolani offered up visual accompaniment that included a succession of impressive spins and amazing lifts. Shortly before the show cut to a break, Val and Karina were revealed to be the winners of the April 8 Twitter contest that asked fans to vote for their favorite male and female pros.
Brooke then met up with a trio of safe contestants. Kellie said her husband "was so excited" to sing for her rumba with Derek, and that the experience "meant the world" to them both. When asked how it felt to not snag the top spot on the leaderboard, Zendaya said "I'm growing every day" and "working harder." Finally, Sean vowed to "redeem" himself on next week's show.
Tom then introduced the season's first AT&T spotlight performance of the season, featuring 17-year-old Brilynn Rakes, who suffers from nystagmus and is legally blind. Despite her admission that "dance did not come easily" she shared that it makes her feel alive. Derek surprised her in the studio to reveal that they'd be dancing a duet, and she was delighted to be performing alongside her favorite dancer. The dance was absolutely lovely, and after the performance, an emotional Derek called Brilynn "an amazing young lady" and said he lives "for these moments."
Andrea Bocelli and Jennifer Lopez teamed up next to perform "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas." Pro dancers Anna Trebunskaya and Val accompanied them with a passionate Argentine Tango.
Afterward, Brooke chatted up the four couples still awaiting their fates. Lisa Vanderpump admitted that the April 8 was a tough night, and D. L. Hughley made a few jokes that weren't especially funny. Victor Ortiz said he'd "worked really hard" despite the low scores he and Lindsay Arnold received for their paso doble, and Andy Dick said if he were eliminated, he'd leave happy because he got to dance for his daughter.
Moments later, D. L. and Cheryl Burke were proclaimed safe to dance again, leaving Lisa, Victor and Andy and their partners in danger of elimination. The field of endangered celebs was narrowed further as Andy and Sharna were cleared to dance again, leaving Victor and Lindsay and Lisa and Gleb Savchenko, as the week's bottom two. After the requisite dramatic music, Lisa and Gleb were eliminated from the competition.
To bookmark her stint on the hit reality show, Lisa called her competitors "a wonderful bunch of people" and proclaimed dancing with Gleb "a gift."
Dancing with the Stars 2013 resumes April 15 on ABC with the next round of the season 16 competition, featuring the return of the always popular Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
