Big Bang Theory returned for season seven with "Hoftstadter Insufficency," and just about everyone's friendships are changing. Raj (Kunal Nayyar) searches for a new woman and has an unlikely moment with Mrs. Davis, while Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Amy's (Mayim Bialik) time away at a conference leads not to intellectual talk, but catty fighting.
Sheldon and Penny
But most interesting of all? Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) deepen their friendship. Sure, Sheldon won't admit that he's missing Leonard (Johnny Galecki) out at sea -- despite his kraken nightmare -- but he has a very important, deep dark secret to reveal. But no, unfortunately that secret has nothing to do with his feelings for Amy. Rather, it's about how he hates the thumb rating system on YouTube. When Penny dismisses him though, he reveals that she hurt his feelings when she walked away from him.
And just like that, their relationship is a tad bit different, and perhaps even more meaningful than her singing "soft kitty" to him when he's sick on Big Bang Theory. As for Penny's secret? She had a topless scene in a horror movie about a killer gorilla. Too bad Sheldon has already seen it, thanks to Howard two seconds after the BBT gang met her. (It's also how Leonard awesomely introduces his girlfriend to his seafaring friends).
Raj and Women
As for Raj, he may be seeing Lucy's face in everything from grease to pie, but now that he can talk to women, he's trying to enter the dating pool. But he's failing, especially after talking about infidelity and penguins. Howard (Simon Helberg) says, "It was better when you couldn't talk to women," and truer words have never been spoken, especially by Howard.
While Raj may have a ways to go though, he does make amends with Mrs. Davis by connecting to her on a human level. Because if he was hitting on her? She would most definitely know it because she'd feel uncomfortable and feel a bit sad for him.
Bernadette and Amy
Last and somewhat least are the girls hanging out together without Penny, which, unsurprisingly, makes getting hit on by guys all the more exciting. But when Bernadette suggests that Amy could do better than Sheldon, Amy takes it personally. She won't listen to "rotten things about her sweet baboo." In general though, Bernadette and Amy's storyline just feels like filler. Nothing really comes out of their minor fight, nor do they grow any closer.
The Big Bang Theory season seven premiere continued with a second, even funnier, episode.
